Auburndale, FL. (March 16, 2025) – The (receiving votes) UMass Boston baseball team (7-2) dropped a tightly contested matchup against (RV) Rutgers-Camden (10-1) on Sunday afternoon, as a late push fell just short 2-4 after nine innings.
UMass Boston used five pitchers in the outing, led by senior
Thomas Kierce (Cohasset, Mass.) with three of the Beacons' six total strikeouts in the final 2.1 innings.
Logan Lawrence (Taunton, Mass.) and
Connor Curtis (Mansfield, Mass.) each pitched scoreless, hitless performances, with Lawrence active for three innings, and Curtis active for one.
Rutgers-Camden sprang out to an early four-run lead in the first inning on three hits, including a three-run homer, their only scoring inning of the contest.
UMass Boston was scoreless through six frames. They recorded two hits in the second inning, one in the fourth and fifth, before finding the light in the seventh inning.
In the seventh,
Mike Meagher (Marston's Mills, Mass.) opened the inning with a leadoff double down the left field line. Meagher was later scored on an error in right field off the
Richard Williams' (Georgetown, Mass.) drive for the Beacons first run of the game.
In the bottom of the ninth, UMass Boston was able to string together two hits for one more run, before the comeback efforts fell just short.
Jacob Levine (Easton, Mass.) was on the board first with a one-out single to right, and
Reed Burkett-Schneider (Austin, Tex.) laced an RBI double to left that scored
Nick Farnacci (Farmingdale, N.Y.).
By The Numbers:
- Brandon Gaer (Rocky Hill, Conn.), Meagher and Levine led the way at the plate for the Beacons with two hits each. Meagher was one of two runners to score, and added a double to his career totals (7).
- Burkett-Schneider recorded an RBI with a double in his only at-bat of the game.
The Beacons are back in action against Salem State tomorrow (Mar. 17) at 1:00 p.m. from Auburndale, FL at the Lake Myrtle Main Field.
