Beacons Drop First Game of the Season Against #17 Rowan

Auburndale, FL. (March 15, 2025)—The (receiving votes) UMass Boston baseball team (7-1) put up a valiant effort against the NCAA 17th- seeded (d3baseball.com) Rowan University (6-1), but ultimately fell short in a strong showing against a top-seeded team for their first loss of the 2025 season.

Rowan sprang out to a quick lead, notching 12 runs in the first four innings. In the final five frames the Beacons outscored Rowan 11-5. Rowan's early start ultimately proved enough, as the Beacs dropped their first game of the season 11-17 after nine innings.

First-year Justin Silverstein (Shelton, Conn.) led all pitchers in strikeouts, as he put down two of the three batters he faced in the seventh inning.

How it Happened:
Rowan scored two runs back-to-back in the second and third innings, before rallying for seven more on six hits in the fourth inning.

In the fifth and sixth innings, the Beacons lit up at the dish, scoring four in the fifth and five in the sixth to outscore Rowan 9-4 in the two frames.

In the fifth, sophomore Elliot Miles (Portsmouth, N.H.) forced a walk and was advanced to third off the Nick Farnacci (Farmingdale, N.Y.) single. Mike Meagher's (Marston's Mills, Mass.) single scored Miles. Bostyn Burris (Highland Village, Tex.) later laced a three run homer to bring in Meagher and Richard Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) to total four total runs in the inning.

In the sixth inning, the Beacons scored five runs on four hits and one Rowan error. Farnacci flied out to left on the sacrifice to score Derek Hawley (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) on the tag up from third. Mariano Jimenez (Waltham, Mass.) laced a two-run RBI-single to left that scored Miles, who singled to get on base, and Nicolas Piscioniere (Shelton, Conn.). Burris added his second hit and fourth RBI of the game off a single to right that scored Williams. Justin Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.) drove in the final run of the inning on a ground out to second that allowed Jimenez to come across.

UMass Boston scored two more runs on the basepath in the top of the ninth, but the comeback efforts came up short as their spring break record drops to 1-1 for their first loss of the season in a strong showing against a top-seeded Rowan University.

By the Numbers
  • Burris and Jimenez were each 2-5 from the plate, with Jimenez driving in two runs and scoring another, and Burris claiming four RBIs and one run scored. The duo combined for four of the Beacs' nine total hits.
  • Gouveia, Farnacci, and Meagher each recorded one hit and one RBI.
  • Four of the Beacs' 11 total runs were scored by Miles and Williams, as the duo scored two runs each for a team-high in runs scored.
UMass Boston returns to Spring Break action on Sunday (Mar. 16) against the (RV) Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers-Camden University in a highly anticipated matchup for national seeding. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
