Boston, MA (Feb. 16, 2025) --- The UMass Boston Beacons women's hockey team fell in a shootout to the Herons of William Smith College Saturday. Despite the end result, the Beacons will host the same Herons in the Quarterfinals of the NEHC tournament Saturday, February 22nd at 7pm.
How it Happened
Prior to the start of today's contest, the Beacons honored their six graduating seniors, Katie Wilbert, Liz Kramp, Margeaux Butters, Allie Reifler, Gabby Shontz, and Melina Maggio.
It was a stalemate for the majority of the game as the Herons and Beacons battled evenly through two periods of scoreless action.
With the Herons needing a positive result in order to host the quarterfinal round, they pulled their keeper with roughly three minutes remaining in the game. Senior for the Beacons, Margeaux Butters would score the senior day goal unassisted with less than two minutes remaining, but the Herons would fight back getting the equalizer with less than a minute remaining thanks to Rowan Kennedy.
Veronika Hadamovsky made five saves in the overtime period to bring her total to 30 on the day and push the game to a shootout. It would take until the fifth round for a winner to be decided when the Falcons scored ending the contest.
