BOSTON, Mass. (October 11, 2025) – Senior forward Andrea Rivera (San Juan, P.R.) and senior midfielder Sofia Roberts (Westwood, Mass.) each found the back of the net to lift UMass Boston women's soccer (5-6-2, 1-2-1 LEC) to a 2-1 victory over Vermont State University Castleton (5-8-0, 2-3-0 LEC) on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at James Cotter Field. The win marks the Beacons' first Little East Conference victory of the season.
Rivera opened the scoring less than a minute into the match, burying her second goal of the year off a feed from Daniella Celotto (Prospect, Conn.) to give UMass Boston an early 1-0 advantage. The Spartans answered in the 14th minute to even the score, and the teams went into halftime tied 1-1.
The Beacons dominated the first half offensively, outshooting Castleton 11-3 (6-2 on goal) while holding a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
After back-and-forth play in the second half, Roberts capitalized in the 73rd minute, driving into the box and sending a deflected shot past the keeper to reclaim the lead for the Beacons.
Despite another 13 shots in the second half, UMass Boston's defense held strong to secure the win — highlighted by sophomore Avery Weinstein (Winnetka, Ill.), who earned her first career victory in net. Weinstein, a dual-sport athlete (UMass Boston softball), collected the milestone win in just her second appearance as goalkeeper, less than three days after stepping up to fill the role for Head Coach Amy Zombeck.
UMass Boston returns to action on Wednesday, October 15, when they host Westfield State University at 7 p.m. at James Cotter Field.
