Women’s Soccer Drops Midweek Non-Conference Battle with Suffolk

BOSTON, MA (October 1, 2025) – UMass Boston women's soccer (4-4-2, 0-1-1 LEC) tallied 11 shots on Wednesday night but was held scoreless in a 2-0 home loss to Suffolk University (6-1-2, 1-1-0 CNE) at James Cotter Field.

The first half was evenly played, with both teams recording six shots. First-year goalkeeper Janiya Matier (North Easton, Mass.) kept the Rams off the board with four saves to preserve a scoreless opening 45 minutes.

Suffolk turned up the pressure after the break, outshooting the Beacons 10-5. The Rams broke through in the 69th minute when Avery Porter headed home a corner from Scarlett D'Amico for her third goal of the season. They sealed the win in the closing minutes with a breakaway finish from Lily Goldmann.

Matier posted a career-high eight saves in the loss, continuing to develop as the Beacons' primary option in net. A total of 20 players saw action for UMass Boston, with Sofia Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) and Cloe Kapetanakos (Weymouth, Mass.) each playing all 90 minutes. Senior forward Andrea Rivera (San Juan, P.R.) and Lucinda Cotter (North Easton, Mass.) joined Schallmo in forcing saves on Suffolk's goalkeeper.

The Beacons will look to bounce back on Saturday, October 4, when they travel to Danbury, Conn., for a 1:00 p.m. Little East Conference matchup against the WestConn Wolves.
