WILLIMANTIC, CT. (January 25, 2025) – The Beacons' (7-11, 4-5 Little East Conference) sophomore forward
Sabanna Berrios (Providence, R.I.) continues her stretch of outstanding performances with another 20-point double-double, including a new career-high 26 points and 13 rebounds with two steals and two blocks in UMass Boston's 69 – 51 win over LEC opponents the Eastern Connecticut State Warriors (7-11, 6-3 LEC) on the road.
Juniors
Sibayla Jensen (Portland, Ore.) and
Tatiannah Fevry (Dracut, Mass.) combined for 24 points (Jensen with 13, Fevry with 11) to spearhead the offensive effort with Berrios and give the Beacons their first win over the Warriors since 2018, and one-point shy of tying their most significant victory against ECSU in program history.
How it Happened:
First Quarter:
- The two teams traded baskets back and forth, with the game remaining even after the initial six minutes. Following the media timeout, a 7-6 run by the Beacons to close out the first, giving them a one-point cushion heading into the second quarter. Berrios forced a steal in the expiring moments before dishing off the assist to Hialeah Turner-Foster (Mashpee, Mass.) to end the first quarter box.
Second Quarter:
- A Fevry three-pointer kick-started the second quarter scoring, which opened the door to an 11-5 run over the ensuing four minutes. Sophomore forward Samora Merchant (Brookfield, Conn.) capped off the run off the assist from Jensen to give UMass Boston a seven-point cushion. Back-to-back three-pointers from the Warriors brought them back to within one before UMass Boston built out another 9-3 run, closed out by Turner-Foster on the steal and score to end the quarter. The Beacs outscored the Warriors 22-16 in the second quarter, led by Berrios with eight points in the quarter and 14 points in the first half.
Third Quarter:
- The Beacons outscored the Warriors 18-13 in the third, led by eight points by Berrios. She scored the first six consecutive field goals that sparked a 12-2 UMass Boston run. Jensen scored back-to-back layups to close out the quarter, giving UMass Boston the lead with 55 points to ECSU's 43.
Fourth Quarter:
- Following Berrios' opening basket, Fevry took control, scoring six of the Beacons' 14 fourth-quarter points. Her final basket with 1:07 remaining secured an 18-point advantage as UMass Boston ran away with the win in Willimantic, CT.
By the Box:
- Berrios reset the career-high benchmark with 26 points. With 13 rebounds, she played to another double-double, her sixth in seven games. She also caused chaos on the defensive end with two blocks and two steals.
- Merchant scored an efficient eight points with 10 rebounds, her fourth game with ten or more rebounds this season.
- Jensen pioneered the offense again with a team-high four assists with her 13 points and two steals.
- The Beacons held the advantage in second-chance points (8-4), points off turnovers (22-9), bench points (11-4), and points in the paint (48-10).

- The Beacons return home to the Clark Gymnasium from their three-game road stint on Wednesday, January 29, at 5:00 p.m., as they continue the LEC regular season against the Wolves of Western Connecticut.
