Schallmo’s Brace Lifts the Beacons Over the Eagles.

BANGOR, ME (September 28, 2024) On Saturday, September 28, the UMass Boston Beacons traveled all the way to Bangor, Maine where the Husson University Eagles hosted today's non-conference competition. The Beacons were able to walk away with another win following intense defensive play by both teams.

The Basics (W-L-T):

Final Score: UMass Boston Beacons 2 - 1 Husson University Eagle's

UMass Boston: 6-1-3 (1-0-0 Little East Conference)

Husson University: 3-5-0 (2-0-0 Conference of New England)

How It Happened:

  • The opening score of the match came from the Beacons' first-year forward Sofia Schallmo (Norwood, MA) from just outside the box. The attack came off errand passes by Husson as Schallmo was able to execute a standing tackle and follow it up with a gather and shot from just outside of the box. The ball being placed in the bottom left corner where it barely skipped passed the Eagles' Madison Weigler (Manchester, NH).

  • In the following few minutes, the Beacons got off to a quick attack. First-year forward Daniella Celotto (Prospect, CT) pushed the through ball inside the box where an unmarked Schallmo ripped a grounder past the goalkeeper to the bottom right of the net, resulting in the second goal of the day for Schallmo and an assist for Celotto.

  • No more than five minutes later, the Eagle's mounted their own counterattack in order to get on the scoreboard. The attack came by cross as the Eagle's Kendra Donahue (Kingston, MA) launched it high in the air, which led to an assist off the score by Natalie Aviolla (Hudson, FL).

By The Numbers:

  • The competition today showed a fierce display as both teams combined for a total of 21 shots, Beacon's 10 (four on goal) and Eagles 11 (four on goal)

  • The aggressive play led to many fouls (Beacon's with 10, Eagle's with 19) on both sides and two yellow cards for the Beacons (Senior midfielder Georgia Bonney (Kingston, Mass.) and Schallmo).

  • Schallmo is leading the way for the Beacons this season as she nets two goals in this contest (five total on the season), assisted on one goal by Celotto.

  • Senior netminder Isabella O'Connell (Abington, Mass.) retook the reigns between the posts, adding three saves in route to her second win in five contests. She is now 2-1-1 this season.

Who's Next:

  • The UMass Boston Beacons look to ride the hot streak from Schallmo as they will host the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs on October 2nd for a Little East Conference evening match. Game time is 7:00 pm and will be located on the James Cotter Field in Boston, Massachusetts.
