Boston, MA (Sep. 11, 2024) -- The Umass Boston volleyball team handed Wentworth Institute of Technology their first loss of the season in a thrilling 5 set victory.
How it Happened
The Beacons and Leopards traded points in the first set with 11 different lead changes and 16 tie scores. At 23 all, Paige Coulson got the kill from the assist of Ruby Ackerman to give the Beacs 24 before they clinched set 1 due to an attack error by WIT.
In set two the Beacons took the lead 4-3 and never relinquished it from there finishing with the 25-18 win. In set three, WIT had just one error and was attacking at .333% keeping the Beacs to 24 points total between the 3rd and 4th sets.
In the final set, the Beacons started by scoring the first three points. After allowing two to WIT, UMB came back with four more switching the court at a score of 8-4. After switching sides Wentworth went on their own run bringing the score to 9-8. Paige Coulson had some crucial kills late in the game and Amelia Devlin scored the 15th and final point to give the Beacons the win.

Dylan Wertzberger led the Beacons in kills (16) and digs (27). As a team, UMass Boston registered 9 total blocks with Mikayla Cleary leading in that category with 4.
