Volleyball Secures First Win of 2024 Over St. Joesphs Long Island

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y (August 31, 2024) – The UMass Boston Volleyball Team picks up the first win of the 2024 campaign on the road against Saint Josephs University Long Island in three straight sets from the NYU Tournament in New York City, New York.

The Basics:

UMass Boston 3 vs Saint Joesph's Long Island 0 (25-22, 31-29, 25-17)

UMass Boston: 1-1

St. Joe's L.I: 0-2

How It Happened:
Senior Dylan Wertzberger (Dallas, TX) opened scoring to start the game with a crisp kill that initiated a 12-3 run before the Golden Eagles found their footing. With a two-point advantage in set one, sophomore Mya Perron (Beverly, Mass.) would drive in a Kill to give the Beacons the set one victory.

The second set featured a back-and-forth battle, with the biggest lead from either team only stretching to five points, as a kill by Beacons' sophomore Paige Coulson (Marriottsville, Md.) would bring an early Beacons' lead up 7-2. Coulson would later deliver the final blow in set two with back-to-back aces to settle set two with a score of 31-29.

Set three saw the Beacs handle business as they jumped out to an early 10-5 lead and ran up the scoring to 25-17 to ground the Golden Eagles in New York, and to secure the first 'W' of the 2024 campaign.

By the Numbers:
Coulson led all Beacons in kills with 11, and Wertzberger (eight) and Perron (seven) contributed a combined 15. Perron had herself a day serving the ball, with a team-high four aces, followed by Coulson with three, and junior Ruby Ackerman (Arcadia, Calif.) with two. Ackerman was also the primary playmaker for the Bears in the win, with a team-high 20 assists and a team-high in digs with 12. Ackerman was pivotal in her two-way play to provide a foundation for the Beacs' first win of the season.
