Softballs Record-Setting Season Comes to a Close with Loss to Rhode Island Col.

Boston, Mass. – The UMass Boston softball team's season came to a close Friday afternoon as they were eliminated from the Little East Conference (LEC) Softball Tournament by a score of 2-0 at the hands of Rhode Island College. With the loss, the Beacons ended their season with a record of 28-12 (11-5 LEC), while the Anchorwomen improved to 31-11 (10-6 LEC).

Friday afternoon's elimination was a pitcher's duel through and through. There would be two total hits, both of which belonged to the Beacons, i until the top of the seventh inning. The Anchorwomen would break the deadlock off a two RBI single to right field to give them a 2-0 lead and close out the game.

Senior Bri Melchionda was lights out in today's outing. She would strike out six and only allow three hits in her complete game outing. Additionally, Melchionda would throw a no-hitter through six innings of work and face the minimum through five innings.

Even though the season comes to a close, there is a lot for this group to be proud of. This year they had the best start to a season in program history with a 16-2 record, the best LEC record in program history at 11-5, the best home record at 15-3, and the second-best overall record in program history at 28-12.

The dominant pitching performance in the 2024 season showed as this year's rotation posted an ERA of 1.55 which breaks a record that was held since 1983. Melchionda breaks her own record for best era posted in a season with a 1.05 (min 80 innings pitched) and Graduate Jacqueline Cherry taking the second spot for the second-best ERA in a season in program history posting a 1.56. Furthermore, the 2024 Beacons' rotation holds the record for most strikeouts in a season with 245 punch outs.

On the offensive side of the ball, the 2024 Beacons dominated the base path swiping 91 bases, breaking a record that has been held since 1996.
