Softball Splits LEC Doubleheader with Southern Maine Huskies

BOSTON, MA (April 30, 2024)— The Beacons softball team took one of two Little East Conference victories from Gorham Maine on Tuesday evening, securing the game one victory in five innings through a 15-0 rally, followed by a tight game two 4-5 loss against the Huskies of the University of Southern Maine. The Beacons remain 26-10 on the year with a 9-5 LEC record with the regular season finale on Saturday, May 4th as the Beacons celebrate and honor the graduating class with it's Senior Day.

Game One (15-0)

Senior Bri Melchionda handled game one like a business trip, dealing the action for all five innings while striking out seven of the 19 batters she faced, only allowing two hits for zero Huskies runs in game one, as she notches her 12th win of the season.

Melchionda and first-year Gracie Granger combined for eight RBIs in game one off a combined eight plate appearances. Melchionda batted .500 going two for four from the dish with four RBIs and two runs scored, while Grander also went two for four with four RBIs and one run scored.

Sophomore Sofie Richland led the team from the dish in game one with a 100% success rate going four for four from the plate with a double, a triple, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Sophomore Lauren Miner also went 100% in three appearances, as she came across to score all three times she got on base, while also driving in an RBI herself.

Heading into the fifth inning, the Beacons had already scored eight unanswered, however, the Beacons' bats refused to miss contact, as they would rally for another seven runs in the top of the fifth inning. Melchionda initiated the fifth-inning rally with a two-run RBI single up the middle to bring home first-year Mya Perron along with Richland. Junior Amauri English singled through the right side to score senior Hayley Tillberry.

Granger doubled to right-center to score Melchionda and Miner and singled to right field to bring home Granger and English for the final runs in game one.

Game Two (4-5)

In game two, graduate Jacqueline Cherry pitched all seven against the Huskies in game two, and allowed seven hits against 28 batters, while striking out four.

First-year Hayley Krockta and junior Kaitlyn Sawyer provided the Beacons with crucial offense in game two, with each recording two RBI doubles to provide the Beacons with only runs scored in game two. Miner once again went three for three from the plate in game two, as she came across to score once in her three appearances on the base path. As a team, the Beacons produced seven hits in 28 at-bats.

A Huskies double in the first inning would give Southern Maine an early 2-0 lead in game two. In the fourth inning, the Beacons were able to exert their presence once again adding four runs in one inning off Krockta and Sawyer's doubles to put the Beacs up 4-2.

The Huskies dealt the Beacons a heartbreaking blow with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Southern Maine snuck away with a 4-5 victory in game two.

The Beacons' regular-season finale takes place on Saturday, May 4 against the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University from the UMB Softball Field for the Beacons' softball team's senior day celebration.
