Baseball Tallies 12 Hits in 7-2 LEC Victory Over Plymouth State

BOSTON, MA (April 30, 2024)—The UMass Boston baseball team continued on their path toward the Little East Conference regular-season title with their 7-2 victory over the Plymouth State Panthers from their home field at Monan Park, as their conference win streak extends to five consecutive victories in pursuit of the LEC one-seed.

The Beacons junior right-handed pitcher Ross Dexter started on the mound for UMass Boston and dealt the business for six innings, allowing just three hits while sending four batters away by way of the 'K'. Dexter threw just 81 pitches in his six-inning stretch against the 23 batters he faced. Dexter was relieved by seniors Thomas Kierce, Dillon Ryan, and LEC Pitcher of the Week Tim Cianciolo, as the three each took one inning of action in the closing innings. Together, the three relievers combined for four strikeouts and allowed just one hit.

Sophomore Justin Gouveia and senior Bostyn Burris each were the driving factors in the afternoon's victory, as they combined to drive in six of the Beacons' seven runs. Gouveia added two stolen bases to his season total and came across to score once off an RBI walk with the bases loaded, as senior Luke Leavitt was able to work a clutch walk late in the game.

After the Panther scored the first two runs, the first in the second inning off an RBI double to right field, and the second in the sixth off a solo home run, the Beacons turned up for five runs in the sixth inning to take a late commanding lead.

The first run was brought home off Leavitt's walk with the bases loaded to bring home junior Mariano Jimenez from third. Gouveia added two more to the scoreboard following his bases-clearing double to right field to score junior Mike Meagher and senior Mike Gorham to tally the Beacons' third run of the rally.

Burris' single to the same gap in right field allowed Gouveia and Leavitt to come around to score to score the final runs of the rally.

The Beacons added to more runs for insurance in the eighth inning, first off Gouveia's double to left field to bring home Leavitt from second, and then Burris' single to right that brought home Gouveia following his two stolen bases to get from first to third.

The Beacons advance to 24-12 on the season while bolstering a 13-3 LEC record, with their next matchup on Wednesday, May 1st against the Mammoths of Amherst College from Monan Park under the lights at 7:00 pm.
