Softball Drops LEC Pair Against UMass Counterparts From North Dartmouth

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The UMass Boston Softball team dropped a Little East Conference (LEC) doubleheader to their UMass counterparts, UMass Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon. With the losses, the Beacons fall to 20-8 (6-4 LEC), while the Corsairs improving to 18-8 (6-2 LEC). 

The Beacons get back on the diamond Tuesday, April 23 in a LEC doubleheader against the Owls of Keene State. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m at the UMB Softball Field. 

UMass Dartmouth 7, UMass Boston 4 

UMass Boston would get the games' first run from an RBI single up the middle from sophomore Lauren Miner, to bring home senior Haley Tillberry. UMass Dartmouth would take a 2-1 lead off an RBI single from Matos  

 a 2-1 lead off an RBI single from Matos in the bottom half of the opening inning.  

The Corsairs would add two more runs in the following inning increasing their lead to three runs. The Beacons would cut that lead back to two runs in the top of third inning will Tillberry crossing home once again after senior Bri Melchionda reached on an error.  

The bats would go dormant until the bottom of the fifth inning when UMass Dartmouth would tally on another three runs, giving them a 7-3 lead.  

Sophomore Sophie Richland would be responsible for the third Beacons runs to cross the plate. An RBI single in the top of the sixth inning would bring home junior Mackenzie Cahill to bring UMass Boston within four.  

Red-shirt junior Kaitlyn Sawyer would bring in the final run of the game in the top of the seventh after reaching on a fielder choice which drove in freshman Gracie Granger.  

The Beacons used two pitchers in the opening contest. Melchionda would go five innings and struck out five Corsairs. Junior Alexis Fleischer would come in for relief and allow only one hit.  

UMass Dartmouth 4, UMass Boston 0 

Game two would start with a double from Tillberry to get the bats going for the Beacons. Melchionda and Miner would add to the UMass Boston's hit total with two singles in the top of the fourth inning.  

UMass Dartmouth would come out swinging themselves in the bottom of the fourth giving them a 2-0 lead. The Corsairs would put away game two in the bottom of the sixth to close out the game 4-0.  

Melchionda would have a 2-3 day at the plate, with her senior counterpart Tillberry tallying two hits as well. Freshman Mya Perron and junior Amauri English would each tally a hit of their own, with Miner tacking on a base knock of her own.  

Graduate pitcher Jacqueline Cherry would strike out six and only allow two earned runs in her six-inning outing.
