Baseball tallies New Season-High 18 Hits, Fall to Plymouth State

PLYMOUTH, N.H (April 16, 2024) – The UMass Boston baseball team tallied a new season-high for hits in a game, with 18 contributions from the team, but ultimately fall 9-13 against the Panthers of Plymouth State in a Little East Conference road matchup from Plymouth, New Hampshire.

Sophomore Ethan Hunt was the first of six pitchers for the Beacons to see action on the mound against the Panthers. Hunt struck out six in 3.2 innings of action and walked just one against the 23 batters he faced. Hunt was followed by sophomore Justin DeFalco, and seniors Dillon Ryan, Ethan Errera, Thomas Kierce, and Sam Gray. Amongst the relievers, Kierce punched out three batters and only allowed one hit, while Ryan and Gray both struck out two of the three batters they faced in their one inning of action at the rubber.

Sophomore Justin Gouveia continues to light up the field from the batter's box, as he contributed five of the Beacs' eighteen hits in six at-bats, while driving in a run and coming across to score twice. First-year Brandon Gaer followed suit with four hits in five appearances, as he drove in three runs including three run homer in the first inning. Junior Mariano Jimenez tallied three hits in the rally, and came across to score each time he got on base.

Gaer's homerun in the first inning were the first runs to come across in the showdown. The second and third inning saw the Beacons tally following RBIs from junior Mike Meagher and Gouveia. In the fourth inning, Jimenez went yard for a solo-homerun to cut the lead to 6-8. In the fifth and sixth innings, senior Bostyn Burris along with Gaer would cut three more runs out of the Panthers' lead, but proved too little too late, as the Panthers came out on top victorious from their home field.

With the loss, the Beacons remain a strong 18-9 on the season, with an LEC record of 8-2. The Beacons are back up at the plate on Wednesday, April 17 against the Lancers of Worcester State from the Beacons' home stadium of Monan Park.
