Baseball Outshines Worcester State, Protect Monan Park with 15-5 Victory

BOSTON, MA (April 17. 2024) – The Beacons' baseball team notched their 19th win of the 2024 campaign with a 15-5 victory from Monan Park over the Lancers of Worcester State University on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon.

UMass Boston pursued today's matchup with a bullpen day, as senior pitcher Logan Lawrence made his first start of the season on the mound, pitched three innings, and secured his first win of the season. Lawrence in three innings of action punched out six batters and only allowed two hits. Lawrence was relieved by six others in the Beacons' bullpen. Among them included senior Max Moss, sophomore Jake Silveria, first-years Angelo Centrone, Hunter Ward, and senior Aidan McMillan. First-year Kevin Clark was the final reliever to close out the game for the Beacons in the top of the ninth inning.

In 34 at-bats, the Beacons tallied 11 runs on 15 hits, while working nine walks. First-year Elliot Miles, sophomore Max Garner, and junior Mike Meagher led the way for the Beacons from the dish with two hits each, as the three combined for six of the Beacons' 11 hits. Senior Aidan Blake came across to score three of the Beacons 15 runs in three plate appearances, as he worked two walks and took one for the team to drive in a run on a hit-by-pitch. Meagher and Garner each drove in three runs for a combined six of the Beacs' 15 RBIs. Elliot along with sophomore Josh Garner, junior Mariano Jimenez and senior Luke Leavitt each batted for extra bases, as UMass Boston batted for four doubles in the effort.

The Beacons would score their first eight runs unanswered through the initial four innings as UMass Boston jumped out to an early 8-0 lead through the first half on the contest. The first runs of the game were brought home by Jimenez, who drove in Leavitt with an RBI double to left-center. Josh Garner would drive in three additional runs in the third inning with a double down the left field line that would clear the loaded bases and score Max Garner, Meagher, and first-year Brandon Gaer.

In the fifth inning, the Beacons rallied for six more runs to run the tally to 14-1. Three runs were brought in off walks, as senior Bostyn Burris, and Gaer each took one for the team against pitches that ran too far inside. Their walks would force home Josh Garner, and first-year Justin Gouveia. The final run of the inning was driven in from first-year Ryan Slack on a sacrifice fly-out to left field that drove in Gaer for the final run of the rally.

Junior Reed Burkett-Schneider drove in the final run of the game in seventh inning, as he worked a walk with the bases loaded to force home first-year Connor Seeley, who nearly drove in a solo home run over Monan Park's Pesky Pole in right field in his Monan Park debut in the seventh inning.

With the win from Monan Park, the Beacons currently sit at 19-9 on the season with a Little East Conference record of 8-2, which has them sitting at third in the conference. The Beacons' next test is scheduled for
Thursday, April 18th at 3:30 pm against the Golden Bears of Western New England University from Springfield, Massachusetts. Live stats and video coverage can be found at UMass Boston - Official Athletics Website (sidearmsports.com) .
