Boston, Mass. - The UMass Boston Softball team picked up two Little East Conference wins over Western Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon, sweeping Western Connecticut by the scores of 8-1 and 4-0. With the wins, the Beacons improve to 18-6 (4-2 LEC), while the Wolves fall to 10-14 (2-4 LEC).
The Beacons look to hit the 20-win mark with an LEC doubleheader bought with Vermont State University Castleton. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16 at Spartan Fields.
UMass Boston 8, WESTCONN 1
UMass Boston got out a quick 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Bri Melchionda started the scoring with a solo shot to deep right-center field to give the Beacons their first run.
Freshman, Ella Delisle, would bring in the second and third runs, as she reached on an error by the pitcher. Junior Amauri English would score Delisle with a double off the wall to bring the lead to 4-0.
The scoring did not stop there. Melchionda, sophomore Lauren Miner, freshman Mya Perron, and Delisle would all cross the plate again in the third through fifth innings to give the Beacons their 8-1 lead.
Melchionda started game one for the Beacons going 1,2,3 in the first three innings, striking out five of the first nine batters she faced. She would end her complete game outing with a slash line of 12 strikeouts, zero earned runs, and only allowed two hits in addition to her 2-3, solo homerun offensive performance.
UMass Boston 4, WESTCONN 0
The Beacons took control of the bottom half of the doubleheader in the 2nd inning when redshirt junior, Kaitlyn Sawyer recorded her fourth RBI of the season bringing freshman Hayley Krockta home to give the Beacons a 1-0 lead.
The third inning was no different for the Beacons who continued their scoring ways; opening with a sophomore Sofie Richland RBI single to center that allowed freshman Gracie Granger to cross home plate unbothered and give the home side a two-run advantage. Senior Haley Tilberry's sacrifice fly allowed English to tag up and enlarge the Beacons' lead to 3-0. Krockta recorded her second double of the game to score the fourth and final run of the game.
Graduate Jacqueline Cherry pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out eight wolves, allowing zero runs while only giving up one hit.
