BOSTON, MA (March 25, 2024) – The UMass Boston softball had their 10-game win streak snapped by the Saints of Emmanuel College as the Saints held down their home field from Boston, Massachusetts on Monday evening.
Senior pitcher
Emily Doble started on the bump for the Beacons, and went four innings from the spot. She saw 23 batters, but seven on base with walks, struck out five, and only allowed three hits. Junior
Alexis Fleischer came in to relieve Doble for the final two innings, as she faced 11 batters and allowed just three hits.
As a team, the Beacons recorded five runs on seven hits, led by two hits from first-year
Hayley Krockta, who recorded one run on two hits, including a triple, in four at-bats. Joining Krockta with two hits was sophomore
Sofie Richland who recorded two hits in three at-bats, as she came around to score twice with two stolen bases, and the sole Beacons' RBI in the effort. Lastly, sophomore
Lauren Miner recorded two hits in three at-bats to go along with one run.
The Beacs had two separate kicks in seven innings of action in the icy wind from Boston on Monday evening, however the Saints started with an early jump in the first two innings off an RBI single combined with a Beacons' error to jump to a 2-0 lead through the first two innings.
The Beacons would put their first two up on the board in the top of the fourth inning with the first coming off a wild patch that would score both Krockta and first-year
Mya Perron level the scoring at the flip of the inning. The Saints responded by rallying for three runs in the bottom of the fourth, scoring off an RBI double and a pair of mistakes in the Beacons' defense.
The Saints added three additional runs just before the Beacs' last chance at the plate, as the bottom of the sixth saw Emmanuel College rally for another three on the score sheet off of solid baserunning on sacrifice fly-outs, as well as a double to right center that would ultimately serve as the Saints' final run.
UMass Boston recorded three runs in the top of the seventh to bring their scoring total to five runs with three to go before tying, however ultimately fell short in their dying breath as their 10-game unbeaten streak had to be let go. Richland brought in the first run of the inning, scoring Miner on a single. She then followed around to score off an error at second base along with senior
Haley Tilberry.
The Beacons fall to 12-2 with the road loss on Monday evening, and postpone the second bout of their doubleheader due to freezing temperatures on Monday night, for a date to be played later on down the road.
