BOSTON, MA (March 10, 2024)—The UMass Boston softball team followed their season-opening victory shortly afterward with a follow-up 3-1 win over the Lakers of Oswego State as they continue their spring break trip at North Myrtle Beach.
Senior pitcher
Emily Doble started on the mound for the Beacons and pitched a full five innings. She faced 22 batters, struck out six, and allowed only one run on five hits. Graduate pitcher
Jacqueline Cherry came in to close the final two innings and struck out three of the seven batters she faced, as she only allowed one hit in her two-inning stint. Senior
Lauryn Bethea had two hits in her three at-bats with an RBI double. Junior catcher
Kaitlyn Sawyer went one for three in her three at-bats with a run and an RBI single. The Beacons' defense worked like a well-oiled machine today, as they only allowed three errors through seven innings.
No hits through the first full inning for either side, as the early goings for the second leg of their triple header was a draw of the defenses. The Beacons were able to knock two hits into play in the second inning, as junior outfield
Amauri English singled to right for the first UMass Boston base knock of the game. First-year
Hayley Krockta immediately followed her up with a single to the opposite side of the field to advance English and put another on base. The Lakers were able to secure three outs in a row following Krockta's single, leaving her and English on base.
Oswego tallied the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning following a wild pitch to score one and advance another into scoring position, however the Beacons' defense stopped the bleeding at just the one run in the fourth inning.
The following inning, in the bottom of the fifth, as they tallied the tying and winning run off just two hits. The rally was initiated by Bethea's double to right field, then followed by Sawyer's single to that she parlayed into a double following an error by the Lakers' center fielder, allowing first-year Dankya Perreault who was pinch running for Bethea to score the tying run. Sawyer would advance on a sac fly from sophomore outfielder
Kyleigh Gray, as Sawyer would come around to score the winning run on an infield error off
Mya Perron's hit. Cherry came in to pitch in the sixth inning and it was an uphill battle for the Lakers from there, as Cherry was deep in her bag. Cherry struck two out on looking strikes to bring the Beacons' bats back to the plate for one more chance at insurance.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Beacons started n the hole with two strikeouts to begin the inning. However, Krockta took one for the team for her at bat and would later be rewarded for it as she was brought home from Bethea's double to center field to add one more run for insurance to secure the victory.
The Beacons have won the first two of the three games for their day one triple header from North Myrtle Beach South Carolina, and advance to 2-0 on the season before their final game of the day against Sweet Briar College, as the Beacons' softball team looks to make it 3-0 on day one of their spring break trip.
