Big Second Half Helps Beacons Outrun Cougars

Worcester, Mass. - A rain-soaked road environment forced UMass Boston Men's Lacrosse into an atypically slow start, but their offensive attack came alive in the second half. A 13-9 victory over Clark gave the Beacons their second win in as many games this year.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 13, Clark University 9

UMass Boston (2-0)
Clark University (2-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED
For the second time in as many games in a UMass Boston uniform, Sean Daly got the Beacons started with an unassisted goal. The imposing midfielder forced his way through the Clark defense to put his team up 1-0.

The Cougars were quick to tie the game, but Zach Mann was just as quick with the response. Like Daly, Mann's score was of the unassisted variety, making his own path to the net to retake the one-goal advantage. That advantage did not survive the buzzer, however, as Clark sniped their second goal of the game to tie the score at 2-2 after one quarter.

To kick off the second period, freshman Dale Wills added to an already stellar debut campaign with his 10th point in his first two games, a player-up score courtesy of an assist from Patrick Dwinnells.

The Cougars quickly matched the Wills score with a goal of their own and, after five minutes of scoreless lacrosse, knocked in another to take their first lead of the evening, 4-3.

Playing with an extra player courtesy of a UMB penalty, the Cougars looked to extend their lead before halftime. Instead, the Beacons flipped the script, scoring the player-down goal with a connection between Patrick Carey and Jaden Cronin.

Clark grabbed the lead back on the very next possession, but it was UMass Boston's Greg Wolff taking a pass from Dwinnells to make good on a player-up opportunity with under a minute to play, sending the teams into halftime knotted at five.

Clark snatched the lead back in the opening minutes of the third, but that would be the last advantage the Cougars would hold. Sparked by Charlie Chapman's first goal of the year, the Beacons ripped off six straight goals without an answer. The run was sparked by a highlight reel goal from defensive specialist Sean Cullagh.

Clark did their best to chip away at the deficit, but were met with a response each time. A Chapman goal late in the third and another early in the fourth secured him a hat trick and kept the Cougars at bay.

James Boldy turned in another standout performance in the net, saving 12 shots while holding the opponent to single-digit scoring for the second time in his two starts.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Chapman's three-goal game marked the ninth of his career and his sixth in the past two seasons
  • The Beacons converted 28 of their 29 clear attempts while limiting the Cougars to 26 on 32 attempts
  • Boldy is saving 60% of the shots he sees while maintaining an 8.34 goals against average
  • Ten different Beacons put a goal in the box score against Clark
  • UMass Boston snapped a four-game losing streak against the Cougars in their first matchup since 2013

WHO'S NEXT
The Beacons will travel to Hartford, Connecticut on Saturday, March 2 to face former NCAA Division I member the University of Hartford. That game will start at noon.
