Women's Hockey Caps Off Dramatic Back-to-Back with Narrow 2-1 Defeat at JWU

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - UMass Boston Women's Hockey were on both ends of a game-winning goal this weekend, falling to Johnson & Wales University on Saturday by the exact same score by which they were victorious on Friday night. This time around it was the Wildcats providing the final score, an overtime game-winner to hand the Beacons a 2-1 defeat.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 1, Johnson & Wales University 2 (OT)

UMass Boston (11-11-3, 10-6-2 NEHC)
Johnson & Wales University (6-17-2, 5-12-1 NEHC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Much like Friday night's tilt, the first two periods of Saturday night's game were an absolute battle between goaltenders. In a showdown of Leahs, JWU's Leah White flattened all 16 shots she saw through two frames while UMass Boston's Leah Bosch stopped all 17 shots she faced.

A Johnson & Wales penalty in the opening minutes of the third period gave the Beacons their best look at breaking the scoreless tie. Out of the penalty, leading point-scorer Katie Wilbert won her face off, had a shot blocked, and, with the help of Gianna Skrelja, fed the ensuing rebound to Allie Reifler in front of the goal. Reifler ripped the back of the net for the game's first score.

With time ticking off the clock late in the third, it looked as if the Wildcats may not have a response in the tank. With just over two minutes to play, however, Sophia Brea managed to sneak a puck past Bosch to tie the game at one goal apiece.

A Wildcat penalty in the closing minutes of the third gave the Beacons a power play that spanned the end of the game and the beginning of the overtime period. The Beacons wagered seven shots with the advantage but could not crack the goal.

Just over a minute into the extra frame, the Wildcats first shot of overtime found the back of the net. With the 2-1 loss, the Beacons split the weekend series with JWU and fell back to .500 on the season.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Saturday marked Bosch's tenth game this season with at least 60 minutes played in net and at least 20 shots saved
  • Wilbert has eight points in her last six games
  • Gabby Shontz blocked two shots on Saturday to maintain a narrow 45-43 advantage over Margeaux Butters for the team lead
  • Johnson & Wales now holds a slight advantage in the all-time series between the two teams, improving to 6-5-1

WHO'S NEXT
The Beacons have secured a home playoff game in the upcoming NEHC tournament and will await their opponent to be announced this weekend.
