BOSTON, MA (November 9, 2024) – The UMass Boston volleyball team finished the 2024 regular season with a 3-1 win from the Clark Gymnasium against the Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) Warriors to secure the Senior Day victory along with the Little East Conference three-seed.
The Basics:

How it Happened:
- UMass Boston came out on top of a close first set with a final score of 21-25. Senior Dylan Wertzberger (Dallas, Tex.) was hot from the outside, finishing with four kills in the first set. The four year vet set the tone for the rest of the team early on, keeping them close in the first set. The largest lead of the opening set only crept up to five points, when Wertzberger took service and initiated a six-point unanswered run.
- The second set emulated the first with a tight race to 25 points, the Warriors came away in the final rallies to break away from a 20-20 stalemate on a five to two run to finish out the set.
- The third set saw the Beacons put the pedal to the medal and breezed by to a 15-25 third set win. It was a total team effort, with multiple kills by outside hitters, sophomore Paige Coulson (Marriottsville, Md.), and junior Lauren Westlund (Phoenix, Ariz.), and first-year middle blocker Addie Blomgren (Riverside, Ill.).
- The final set came down to the wire with the Beacons pulling away in the final rallies from an 18-18 stalemate. The two teams traded points, with the Beacons pulling out to a slight two point lead. Kills by Wertzberger and Westlund tied the bow with combined kills to slay the Warriors and conclude the season on a Senior Day W.
By the Numbers:
- Wertzberger showed out in her final regular season appearance, adding a team-high 12 kills in the win. Westlund was just behind her with double digit kills (10). Coulson and Blomgren combined for 16 kills cumulatively (eight each).
- The reigning LEC Rookie of the Week, first-year setter Audrey Cofield (Ypsilanti, Mich.) posted a team high 41 assists in four sets played for an average of 10.25 assists per set.
- Wertzberger led the time in service aces with three.
- Blomgren stretched for five total blocks, two by herself, and three assisted. Westlund also posted two solo blocks.
- The reigning LEC Defensive Player of the Week, first-year libero Mary Mattews (Wilsonville, Ore.), posted a team-high 32 digs in four sets played for an average of eight digs per set.
- Wertzberger (15.0), Blomgren (13.5), and Westlund (13.0) finished with team-highs in points.
Up Next:
- With the Beacons concluding the season 6-2 in the LEC, they will enter the 2024 LEC Tournament as the conference three-seed, one seed higher than their 16-9 (5-3 LEC) finish from the previous season. They will play in round one of the LEC Tournament on Tuesday, November 12 at 6:00 p.m against the sixth-seeded Keene State Owl, the same opponents who the Beacons beat in round one of the 2023 LEC Tournament.
