Beacons Cruise to Victory in Opening Round of LEC Tournament, Eyes Turn to Corsairs

Boston, MA (Nov. 12, 2024) --- The UMass Boston Beacons volleyball team took care of business Tuesday night, opening the LEC tournament with a 3-0 win over the Keene State Owls at the Clark Athletics Center.

The Beacons are now on a nine-game winning streak and will be taking on second ranked – and defending LEC Champions – UMass Dartmouth on Thursday at 7pm.

How it Happened

The Beacons put themselves out in front early, taking the first set 25-13. The second set would be the closest of the night as the Beacons had to work to get themselves onto the winning end of a back-and-forth battle. After Audrey Cofield got the Beacons to 15 thanks to a service ace, they wouldn't relinquish their lead again finishing the second set 25-21. Keene State had no answers for the Beacons, falling 25-10 in the third and final set.

Inside the Box Score

  • Wertzberger led the team in service aces with 3 of the Beacons 7.

  • The Beacons led the Owls in every statistical category - 8 blocks to 3, 44 kills to 20, and 7 aces to 2 to name a few.

  • Keene State shot in the negatives 2 out of 3 of the sets.

UMass Dartmouth

  • UMass Dartmouth finished the regular season in second place in the conference standings earning them an automatic bid to the semi-finals.

  • The Corsairs have 1 conference loss this season, coming to Plymouth State University 3-2 in the last game of the regular season. Before that loss the Corsairs were on a 10-game winning streak, only allowing 1 set to be taken from them (the team to do that was the Beacons on October 9th).

  • Kate Wade (387.5) and Olivia Seutter (355.5) both have over 300 points scored for UMass Dartmouth with Wade averaging 4.12 PTS/S and 3.53 kills a set. Wade also leads the team in service aces with 43.
