NEWTON, MA (November 27, 2024) – The Beacons women's basketball teams fell on the road on Wednesday to the Lasell University Lasers, 50-64, in a non-conference tip-off from Newton, Massachusetts.
The Basics:
UMass Boston 50 – 64 Lasell College
UMass Boston (1-5)
Lasell (3-3)
How it Happened:
- After giving up the first two possessions in the paint, the Beacons were able to get on the board with a layup from sophomore forward Sabanna Berrios (Providence R.I.). Sophomore rookie Hialeah Turner-Foster (Mashpee, Mass.) checked in and knocked down a pair of free throws to give the Beacons a one-point lead. Junior captain Sibayla Jensen (Portland, Ore.) finished a fastbreak layup to stretch the lead to the largest of the quarter before the first quarter expired with level scoring at 17 apiece. Junior guard Tatiannah Fevry (Dracut, Mass.) led the offensive charge in the first quarter with five points, including a layup and a triad of free throws.
- Turner-Foster kickstarted the second quarter with another fastbreak layup to retake the lead in the early goings. With just under two minutes remaining in the quarter, first-year forward Ashleigh Lagor (Millbury, Mass.) found her range from beyond the arc to cut the Lasers' lead back to two, and junior captain Beeban Jikiemi-Pearson (London, Eng.) (BJP) ended the half with another basket in the paint. The quarter ended with the Beacons trailing 26-28. UMass Boston swiped seven steals, climbed the latter for a block, and forced 19 turnovers in the first half, allowing them to stay within distance of the Lasers, despite their offensive rut.
- Berrios tied the game back up to open the third quarter. The lasers followed with a five-minute, 11-0 run to put them up 39-28. A Lagor steal would send Jensen out to finish the fastbreak to end the third-quarter run. Turner-Foster joined the fun with another steal and score to bring them to within seven. In the closing moments in the third, Lagor connected on another three-pointer to make it a one-point game.
- The Beacons were outpaced in the fourth quarter, scoring ten to the Lasers' 19 to close out the final quarter.
By the Numbers:
- Turner-Foster once again led all scorers with 13 (4-10 FG, 5-6 FT). Lagor was just behind her with 12 points (3-8 3PT), to go with five rebounds, a block, and three steals. Jensen recorded a game-high six steals. Sophomore forward Samora Merchant (Brookfield, Conn.) once again led the way on the glass with six. 30 of the 50 Beacons' points were scored in the paint, and 19 points were scored off turnovers.
Who's Next:
- The Beacons will look to bounce back in the Little East Conference season opener against the Western Connecticut Wolves on Sunday, December 1 at 1:00 p.m. Tune it to the game preview expected to come over the weekend.
