Wilbert’s Game-Winner Lifts Beacons over Spartans

Boston, MA (Nov. 23, 2024) --- The UMass Boston Beacons continue their best start in NEHC conference play after defeating the Spartans of Castleton 2-1 to extend their winning streak to 6 games.

How it Happened

It was a slow start for the Beacons as both teams took their time to get solid offensive chances in the game. Through the first 20 minutes the Beacons were kept to just 3 shots on goal to the Spartans 10.

After the first intermission the Beacons would flip the script, testing the Spartan keeper, and scoring their first goal of the game by Cassidy Morrison on the power play. Leah Bosch would hold tough in net keeping VTSU Castleton off the board through 2 frames making 19 saves.

Katie Wilbert would get on the board early in the third, unassisted, to give the Beacons a cushion, but the Spartans wouldn't be denied as Caris Erickson got one past Bosch to make it 2-1. Bosch and the defense would shut the Spartans down for the rest of the game, with Bosch making 33 total saves on the day.

Inside the Box Score

  • Through 6 conference games the Beacons have not allowed a single power play goal to be scored on them and have only been scored on once through 8 games while a woman down.

  •  The Beacons have scored 5 power play goals through their 6 conference games – good for second in the conference.

  • Both Emily Hansen and Wilbert registered 5 total shots on net each, Hansen earning an assist and Wilbert the game winning goal.
