Men’s Soccer Hands Rhode Island College First LEC Loss

PROVIDENCE, R.I (October 5. 2024) – The Beacons' men's soccer team tallies their fourth win of the season and second consecutive on the road against the Rhode Island College Anchormen on Saturday evening.
The Basics
UMass Boston 2 – 1 RIC
UMass Boston 4-1-4 (2-0-1 LEC)
RIC 7-2-1 (3-1)
How it Happened
  • 15 minutes into the first half, the Beacons initiated the attack following a free kick in their own defensive zone. Played short, junior midfielder Luan Cruz (Everett, Mass.) laid off a pass to sophomore midfielder Jair Whyte (St. Johns, Antigua Bermuda). From the right back position, Whyte lofted a pass from his own midfield over the top of the Anchormen's line to find senior defender Diego Gisholt (Tijuana, Mex.) on the run all alone behind the back line. Whyte's pass took one bounce, as Gisholt took a settling touch and slotted first half's only goal.
  • The Beacons found their fire in the second half, applying heavy offensive pressure from the second half's opening whistle. First-year Eduardo Chirico (Minas Gerais, Brazil.) showcased the skill moves by beating his defender with an overhead flick, before laying it off to Gisholt, who came in for support on the right wing. Gisholt's cross found a cutting Logan Erickson Potter (Swansea, Mass.) for the diving header to make it 2-0 in favor of UMass Boston.
  • The Anchormen scored their only goal of the game quickly after the resume. A mistouch in the backfield allowed the Anchormen's' Sekou Kamara to steal possession all alone in front of net, allowing an easy strike into the top right corner.
By the Numbers
  • The Beacons outshot Rhode Island College by a margin of 13-8 (7-3 on target) led by Potter and Chirico with two apiece. Both goals were serviced by two playmakers. Whyte, Chirico, Gisholt, and Cruz each added to their season's totals with an assist in the win.
  • Graduate netminder Andy Ramirez (Waltham, Mass.) registered two saves against three shots on target. His record improves to a still undefeated 3-0-2.
  • Gisholt scored his second goal and tallied his fourth assist. Erickson Potter netted his second goal of the season. Cruz tallied his first points of the season with his assist.
Who's Next:
  • Up next for the Beacons' men's soccer team are the Keene State Owls from the Beacons home turf on the campus of UMass Boston on Saturday, October 12 at 12:00 p.m.
