Men’s Soccer Hosts Offensive Clinic vs Keene State

BOSTON, MA (October 12, 2024) – The Beacons' men's soccer team remains undefeated in the Little East Conference following their massive 5-0 win over the Owls of Keene State from the Beacons' home turf on Saturday afternoon.
The Basics
UMass Boston 5 – 0 Keene State College
UMass Boston: 5-1-4 (3-0-1 LEC)
Keene State College: 3-6-3 (2-2-1 LEC)
How it Happened
  • Sophomore midfielder Patrick Garcia (Brookline, Mass.) opened up scoring in the seventh minute of play following an interception in the Owls' backfield. Garcia took one touch to settle and another to slot the game's first shot into the bottom left corner for his second goal of the season.
  • 17 minutes in, first-year forward Eduardo Chirico (Minas Gerais, Bra.) played out wide on the wing to senior defender Diego Gisholt(Tijuana, Mex.). Gisholt's cross found sophomore forward Rafael Gross (Minas Gerais, Bra.) as he powered a shot into the top right corner for Gross' second goal of the season, doubling the Beacons' lead.
  • The Beacons would add their third of the game off a Gisholt service from the far side corner to find a raising Chirico in the middle of the box. Chirico's height and verticality allowed him to outstretch the Owls' defender and put his head behind the cross. His header found that same top left corner for the Beacons' third of the game and Chirico's third of the season.
  • With just under ten minutes remaining in the first half, graduate defender Max Mian (Barcelona, Spa.) scored what could be the goal of the season for UMass Boston, sending in a curler from the right-side to find the back of the net directly from the corner kick.
  • The game's final tally came from a UMass Boston set piece. Mian played senior defender Logan Erickson Potter (Swansea, Mass.) short, passing the wall from a free kick about 20 yards out. Erickson Potter blitzed into the box and sent a left-footed shot past the Owls' defense for his third goal of the season and the game's final.
By the Numbers
  • UMass Boston applied the pressure through their offense, outshooting the Owls 18 (11 on target) to five (three on target). The duties between the posts were shared today between graduate Andy Ramirez (Waltham, Mass.) and junior Victor Reyes (La Union, El Salvador.). Ramirez played 64 minutes and didn't see a single shot in his time. Reyes recorded three saves in just under 26 minutes of action for his second game played. The Beacons doubled their chances from the corner, as they had eight opportunities from the corner compared to the Owls' four.
  • Erickson Potter and senior defender Marron Acheampong (Kumasi, Gha.) led the way offensively, providing two shots on goals.
  • Gisholt served as the primary playmaker, adding two assists.
  • As a team, five goals is a season-high for the Beacons' men's soccer team for goals in a game. With two conference games on the horizon for next week, the Beacons seem to have found their footing heading into the later stages of the campaign.
Who's Next:
  • Next week, the Beacons' men's soccer team will play host to the University of Southern Maine Huskies at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, from the Beacons' home turf, followed by Saturday, October 19, from Danbury Connecticut, as the Beacons travel south to face the Wolves of Western Connecticut.
