Chirico Nets Late Game Winner Against Lancers

WORCESTER, MA (October 23, 2024) – The Beacons' first-year forward Eduardo Chirico netted the game's only goal in a non-conference matchup on the road against the Worcester State Lancers to keep the Beacons' win streak alive.

The Basics
UMass Boston 1 – 0 Worcester State
UMass Boston: 8-1-4 (5-0-1 Little East Conference)
Worcester State: 3-9-1 (2-2-1 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference)
How it Happened
  • For 70 minutes, the two teams danced in the midfield, with both sides creating opportunities without success. Defense was the name of the game as the first half ended deadlocked at 0-0. The Beacons entered the second half under offensive pressure, as Worcester outshot the Beacons seven to six.
  • A Beacons' breakaway forced the Lancers to make a play out of bounds, resulting in a corner. Graduate defender Max Mian (Barcelona, Spa.) sent in the cross that was initially booted out. Mian cleaned up the rebound and sent a through-ball that split the Lancers' defense to find a cutting Logan Erickson Potter (Swansea, Mass.), as Erickson Potter sent a one-touch cross that cleared a path directly through multiple diving defenders for Chirico to volley in the game-winner. Chirico's goal keeps the Beacons' win streak alive and extends the current count to six consecutive victories.
By the Numbers
  • The Beacons' graduate netminder Andy Ramirez (Waltham, Mass.) played all 90 minutes against his former squad and registered four saves en route to his second shutout of the season. Ramirez is now 7-0-2 in 11 games played. The defense tactically committed 12 fouls to stifle any offensive output by the Lancers. The Beacons also held the advantage from the corner, taking seven opportunities while keeping the Lancers out of the corner entirely. At the final whistle, the Beacs outshot the Lancers 20-14 (10-4 shots on goal). Senior defender Diego Gisholt (Tijuana, Mex.) made the most contributions with a team-high four shots. But it was the team's leaders in season points, Chirico and Erickson Potter, fresh off conference weekly honors, who powered through and sent the Beacons back with a W. Chirico scored his fifth goal of the season, a new team-high, and Erickson Potter added his fifth assist of the season, good for second-most on the team behind Gisholt (six).
