BOSTON, MA (October 19, 2024) – The UMass Boston women's soccer team drew even, 3-3, in a dogfight against the Wolves of Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference matchup from the James Cotter Field in Boston, Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon.
The Basics:
UMass Boston 3 – 3 WestConn
UMass Boston: 9-5-3 (4-1-1 LEC)
WestConn: 9-3-4 (4-1-1 LEC)
How It Happened:
- WestConn would strike first in just under fifteen minutes of play. The Wolves' second-most leading goal-scorer senior forward, Adriana Alfano, paced down the right wing and poked a shot past the near post for the game's first.
- Beacons' first-year forward Sofia Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) would respond moments later. Schallmo intercepted a short pass in the Wolves' defensive third. With little to no room, she let her shot fly from the right wing outside the 18-yard box to beat the diving Regan Gracen to level the scoring.
- The Wolves would scrap for a second tally just before halftime. Junior midfielder Hannah Blacher would slot in the game's third off a rebound inside the box.
- Beacons' first-year forward Kathryn Brown (Somers, Conn.) would get tripped up in the box, drawing the Beacons a penalty and a chance to make scoring even at two apiece. Schallmo stepped up and delivered with certainty into the bottom right for her 15th goal of the season.
- The Wolves would earn a penalty of their own following a handball in the box. Junior midfielder Sophia Onek would slot home what would appear to be the game's final with time expiring.
- With 14 minutes remaining, senior captain Georgia Bonney (Kingston, Mass.) would send in the throw towards the box. Schallmo would settle possession and used the outside of her boot to spin and shoot. Her shot peppered into the back of the net to shock the Wolves' and the Beacons' faithful in attendance at the James Cotter Field.
- Both teams had opportunities in the closing moments to steal a victory. WestConn missed their second penalty kick in the 80th minute, and both Schallmo and Brown would test Gracen in the final moments, but to no avail.
By The Numbers:
- WestConn and UMass Boston put on a show for spectators, tallying a cumulative 44 shots throughout the game. Both UMass and WestConn registered 22 shots, the Wolves garnering the offensive edge with 12 shots on goal to the Beacons' eight. Junior Julia Cote (Baldwinville, Mass.) started the first half and registered five saves. Senior Isabella O'Connell (Abington, Mass.) closed out the second and registered four saves. O'Connell's season record improves to 2-2-2 following today's draw.
- Schallmo netted all three of her goals through a game-high 15 shots (seven on target) and increased her season totals to 38 points on 16 goals and six assists.
