Beacons Host Anchorwomen of RIC

Boston, MA (Oct. 11, 2024) --- The UMass Boston Beacons play their third home game in a row against the Anchorwomen of Rhode Island College on October 12th, at 12pm. This game will also serve as their Welcome Back Alumni Day. 

The Basics 

Beacons: 9-7 (Overall), 0-2 (Conference) 

Anchorwomen: 10-4 (Overall), 1-2 (Conference) 

Beacons 

  • The Beacons started their LEC play against the two top voted teams in the 2024 LEC Volleyball Preseason Coaches' Poll, Plymouth State 0-3 (voted #2 with 4 first place votes) and UMass Dartmouth 1-3 (voted #1 with 5 first place votes). The Beacons were voted the #4 team in that same poll. 

  • Mya Perron leads the Beacons in kills with 124 on the season and averages 2.48 K/S, good for 2nd on the team behind Dylan Wertzberger who averages 2.96. 

  • Two Beacons have recorded over 20 service aces on the season. Toni Guerra takes the top spot with 27 while freshman Mary Matthews is close behind with 23. Matthews also has a .954 reception percent, leads the team in digs with 239 averaging 4.19 per set. 

  • UMass Boston has 88 total blocks on the season with both Addie Blomgren (25 total blocks, 14 solo blocks) and Mikayla Cleary (23 total blocks, 10 solo blocks) over 20 on the season. 

Anchorwomen 

  • Voted 9th in the 2024 LEC Volleyball Preseason Coaches' Poll. 

  • In LEC play, they have defeated Vermont State University Castleton 3-1, and lost to Plymouth State University 0-3 and Eastern Connecticut Sate 2-3. 

  • Their loss to Eastern Connecticut State was their most recent game. After falling in the first set 26-24, the Anchorwomen took the 2nd and 3rd sets before falling in the 4th. The deciding 5th set was a close one, with the Warriors winning the set 15-13. 

  • Sarina Marines leads Rhode Island College in kills with 171 on the season, averaging 3.42 kills/set - also good for first on the team. 

  • Three players have had success on the service line with Daniella Escudero, Yuleisy Alvelo, and Caroline Morrell all contributing over 20 service aces. 

  • At the net Andrayah Williams has been a force with 27 blocks, 11 more than the next highest Anchorwoman. 

History 

  • The Beacons won the last matchup between these two teams 3-0 with each set being closely contested. 

  • The Beacons also historically have great success while playing the Anchorwomen in the Clark Athletics Center owning a record of 10-1 while at home compared to 8-14 on the road. 

  • In the last 10 meetings the Beacons hold the advantage 9-1.
