BOSTON, MA (January 5, 2024)—The UMass Boston women's ice hockey team dropped their road matchup against Curry College from Milton, MA on Friday evening, as sophomore forward
Emily Hansen's first-period opener wasn't enough to put the Beacons atop the Colonels, as the final score read 3-1 in favor of Curry College.
UMass Boston led the game in shots on goal and faceoffs won, as the Beacons edged out the Colonels 24 to 23 in total shots, and won 26 of the 50 total faceoffs during the contest. The Beacons were led offensively by Hansen and graduate forward
Hannah MacDougall, with each contributing four shots on net. First-year forward
Jenna Majewski and sophomore forward
Kristen Briggs each were highly efficient for the Beacons in the faceoff circle. Majewski went 100% winning both two faceoffs she stepped up to, with Majewski winning four of her six faceoffs. Sophomore defender
Mia Boyd led the team in blocked shots with five goal-stopping deflections. Sophomore goalie
Leah Bosch played all 60 minutes and stopped 20 of the 23 shots she faced.
Senior forward
Katie Wilbert took control of the opening puck drop to secure control for the Beacons to start the game. Opportunities were hard to come by for both teams, but the Beacons held control of the offensive edge through the first period, opening scoring in the 11
th minute off the Beacons' power play goal scored by Hansen, assisted from Webster and junior defender
Gabby Shontz to give the Beacons a one-goal cushion in the first period. Beacons held the offensive edge after the first 20 minutes, outshooting the Colonels 11 to six.
The second period saw Curry College take back the offensive edge, as Ali Olorenshaw brought the Colonels even, and Danielle Reid put them comfortably in the driver's seat. The Colonels were able to regain the lead in the final moments of the period, as they applied the pressure on offense putting eight shots on net compared to the Beacons' seven.
The Beacons were put on their heels in the third period by the offensive pressure of Curry College. The final blow would come early in the third period from Reid's second of the night, as the Beacons were ultimately unable to initiate a comeback following the Colonel's third.
With the loss tonight, the Beacons fall to 3-9-3 on the season, while remaining 2-4-2 in the New England Hockey Conference. The UMass Boston women's ice hockey team will take the ice again on Friday, January 12 as they look to bounce back against NEHC conference opponents the Castleton Spartans from the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink at 6:00 pm. Live stats and video coverage will be available at
