BOSTON, Mass. - UMass Boston Women's Basketball dropped a game in a very familiar fashion on Wednesday night, jumping out in front of the visiting Huskies of the University of Southern Maine after three quarters before eventually falling by a final score of 61-58.
THE BASICS
UMass Boston 58, the University of Southern Maine 61
UMass Boston (3-8, 1-3 LEC)
The University of Southern Maine (5-7, 3-1 LEC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Wednesday evening's game was a defensive slog in the early goings, with both teams combining for just five points through eight minutes of play. A pair of late three-pointers from
Sophie Bradbury and
Keriann Farina gave the Beacons a narrow 9-6 lead heading into the second quarter.
The squads found their rhythm offensively in quarter number two. Southern Maine knotted the score at nine apiece early, but a pair of midrange jumpers from Farina put the hosts back out in front.
Paige Olliverre worked herself out of a shooting slump, knocking down two threes in a matter of minutes to keep the Huskies at bay.Â
Southern Maine eventually flipped the score in their favor, but Olliverre's third triple of the second quarter cut the deficit to two as the teams filed into the locker rooms for halftime.Â
The two teams continued to trade blows in the third quarter and the Beacons found themselves trailing 41-38 with four and a half minutes to play. A
Kayla Jackson jumper cut that lead to one and a Bradbury three flipped the score in favor of the Beacons. A late layup from
Alexah Potter and a made free throw from
Sibayla Jensen kept the UMass Boston lead at two heading into the fourth quarter.
The Beacons led by as many as four points in the final frame but the Huskies' numerous scoring options overwhelmed. Olliverre's fourth three-pointer of the afternoon cut the Southern Maine advantage to two with 44 seconds to play, but the Beacons' final shot attempt missed the mark.
