Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey | | David Cataloni

Four Beacs, Four-Piece For the University of Southern Maine as The Beacs Roll The Huskies.

BOSTON, MA (January 27, 2024) – Senior defenseman Kevin Sadovski, sophomore forward Jude Kurtas, first-year forward Jacob Kaminski, and graduate forward Conor Foley each etched their names on Saturday evening's score sheet, as the UMass Boston men's ice hockey team rolled the Huskies of the University of Southern Maine in a 4-1 win away from home.

Despite not putting any of his five shots through on goal, first-year forward Jack Mortson lead the way offensively for the Beacons attributing to five of the 43 total shots on the night. Junior defenseman Michael Krupinski was the anchor on the defensive end, stopping three shots from the Huskies. Graduate goalie Sam Best once again lived up to his namesake, as he stopped 39 of the 40 total shots he faced. Mortson was also the leader in the faceoff circle for UMass Boston, as he won 13 of his 18 total puck drops.

The Huskies took control from the opening drop to start the game. They won the initial three faceoffs and registered eight shots in the first five minutes of the first period. Despite the offensive pressure they faced, the Beacons converted on Kurtas' first shot of the game off assists by first-year Zander Lizotte and first-year Jakob Teply. UMass finished out the period on the shots on net as time was expiring. Beacons took the first period 1-0 following Kurtas' opener.

The second period opened with a Huskies win from the faceoff circle, however with the Beacons' first possession in the second period, following shots by first-year defender Chris Merryman,         Kaminski scored mere seconds into the start of the period. Kaminski's goal, and the Beacons' second of the day came off assists by first-year forward Chris Repmann and junior forward Evan Googins. The Huskies were able to respond this period within 6 minutes following the conclusion of a Beacons' power play. Foley took control in the faceoff circle to try and regain some of the lost momentum, as he refiled a show on net forcing a save in reply to the Huskies' goal. Best held the Huskies to a single goal in the period, as the Beacs rolled into the third period up 2-1.

It took longer than the first two periods, however the Beacons eventually stuck again halfway through the third to increase their cushion to two goals following a score from Sadovski, off assists from Googins and Foley. Sadovski's goal marks his sixth of the season, good for second-highest mark on the squad behind Kurtas. Foley scored his fifth of the season tonight as an insurance policy to put
the Huskies to sleep off dishes by Krivstov and Sadovski.

With the win tonight, the Beacons improve to 8-11-2 overall, 6-8 in the New England Hockey Conference with the Huskies falling to 6-12-3. The Beacs are back on the ice again on Friday, February 2 against the Soaring Eagles of Elmira College from the Edward T. Barry Rink in Boston MA.
