Shapiro a Hero in Dartmouth!

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - A defensive struggle turned into an offensive shootout in the final 10-plus minutes of Wednesday afternoon's match between interstate rivals UMass Dartmouth and UMass Boston Women's Soccer. When the Beacons needed a goal most, Chloe Shapiro delivered a clutch score to turn a near-loss into a thrilling 1-1 draw.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 1, UMass Dartmouth 1

UMass Boston (3-3-3, 1-0-1 LEC)
UMass Dartmouth (2-3-3, 0-1-1 LEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Wednesday's match was a battle of goalies for the first 79 minutes of play. UMass Boston's Isabella O'Connell delivered with four saves in the first half and another two in the second. Unfortunately for the Beacons, UMass Dartmouth's Grace Conti was just as solid, saving both shots she faced early.

The prospect of securing a point in the standings was in serious trouble for the Beacons after committing a penalty in the 79th minute. Dartmouth's Caroline McAulliffe took advantage of the penalty kick, converting it for the games first goal and a 1-0 lead for the Corsairs.

Less than two minutes after falling behind for the first time all night, the Beacons pulled back to even behind Shapiro's first goal of the 2023 campaign. The clutch goal helped the Beacons maintain their undefeated record in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Shapiro's 81st minute goal was the latest score of the season for the Beacons
  • O'Connell's six saves tied a season high
  • UMass Boston has played to a 1-1 draw three times this season
  • The Beacons stretched their unbeaten streak against UMass Dartmouth to six games, dating back to 2017

WHO'S NEXT
The Beacons will travel to Providence, Rhode Island on Saturday, September 30 to face the Anchorwomen of Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference showdown.
