Volleyball Secures First Victory of the Season in Doubleheader Split at Springfield College Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - On the final day of the Springfield College Tournament, UMass Boston Women's Volleyball split a pair of matches, sweeping Westfield State University in straight sets before being swept by Springfield College on Saturday afternoon at Dana Gymnasium in Springfield.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 3, Westfield State University 0
UMass Boston 0, Springfield College 3

UMass Boston (1-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling into an early 6-3 hole in the opening set, the Beacons used a pair of kills from Taryn Broughal and another from Amelia Devlin to tie the score. A forced error on the following volley gave the Beacons a lead they would not surrender.

Broughal finished the first set with five kills, helping the Beacons secure the 25-21 set win to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set of the match saw a dominant start from UMass Boston. The Beacons opened up with leads of 7-0 and 10-3. A late Westfield State run cut the lead to 23-21 late, but Broughal and Mya Perron finished off the set with a kill apiece.

The Beacons largest lead of the match came during the third set when they used a 5-0 run to stretch an 18-11 lead to a 23-11 advantage. UMass Boston went on to finish off the set and the match, securing a sweep with a 25-14 win.

Devlin led the way in the win over the Owls, contributing 38 assists and seven service aces in the sweep.

The second match of the day was quite a different story for the Beacons, who were swept in straight sets at the hands of undefeated Springfield College. UMass Boston was able to cut the Spirit lead to 24-23 in the second set but could not secure the win.
