SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - UMass Boston Women's Volleyball stole a set from Skidmore College, but it was too little, too late as the Beacons went on to lose their season opener 3-1 at the Springfield College Tournament on Friday night.
THE BASICS
UMass Boston 1, Skidmore College 3
UMass Boston (0-1-0)
Skidmore College (1-0-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beacons pushed Skidmore to the limit in each of first two sets, dropping a narrow 25-21 decision and an even narrower 25-22 loss.
In the third frame, UMass Boston found themselves on the verge of being swept, trailing 22-19. Kills by
Paige Coulson and
Katie Rennie, followed by a service ace from
Lauren Westlund and a forced error by the defense helped the Beacons to a 4-1 run, tying the set at 23-23.
The Thoroughbreds pushed the Beacons to a set point in the third, leading 24-23 with a chance to sweep the match. A kill by
Dylan Wertzberger tied the set at 24. Needing two points to win the set,
Taryn Broughal put away a kill on each of the next two volleys to secure the set for the Beacons.Â
In the end, the victorious third set was not enough to spark a UMass Boston comeback, as they lost by a final score of three sets to one.Â
