CASTLETON, VT -
Gavin Admirand's four goals and five assists on Tuesday afternoon were enough to make him UMass Boston Lacrosse's all-time leader in goals and points, and enough to push the Beacons to a 25-7 victory in their final regular season game.
THE BASICS
UMass Boston 25, Castleton University 7
UMass Boston (11-6, 5-2 LEC)
Castleton University (4-12, 1-5 LEC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beacons went to work as fast as they could on Tuesday, netting their first goal on the game's first possession, just 36 seconds into the opening quarter.
Connor Smith, who scored the opening goal, went right back to the well less than two minutes later, this time assisting on Admirand's 63rd goal of the season.
Smith and Admirand have been the leading scorers for not only the Beacons but the entire Little East Conference all season long. Admirand's 66 goals, 43 assists, and 109 points each lead the LEC by a margin of at least eight. Smith is tied for second in the conference with 50 goals and ranks third in total points with 69.
The Beacons' third goal of the afternoon came from a far more unexpected source as
Jason McNeany won the faceoff following Admirand's goal and went the distance to score his fourth goal of the season.
While he clearly has the ability to find the net as well,
Jason McNeany shined in the circle on Tuesday, winning all 16 of his faceoffs. His .672 faceoff winning percentage ranks among the top 15 in all of NCAA Division III.
The team's three leading goal scorers, Admirand, Smith, and reigning LEC Offensive Player of the Week
Jacob Banks, each added a goal to complete the 6-0 game-opening run for the Beacons. Castleton would net one goal before the end of the quarter, cutting the UMass Boston lead to 6-1.
Gregg Wolff did not score until there were fewer than 10 seconds on the clock in the first half, but he took advantage of his playing time in the second half, joining Smith and Admirand with four goals of his own on the day.
The second half of the victory saw time in net for all three of the Beacons' backup goalies, including 21 minutes for
Otto Kirleis who saved seven shots while allowing just three goals.
Trevor Koppy earned the win, allowing just two goals in his 30 first-half minutes.Â
With his four goals and five assists, Admirand broke the UMass Boston program records for both goals and points in a career. His 191 career goals surpassed Joshua Stolp's 190 which had stood as the record since 2003. His 312 career points surpassed Jamie Mulroney's 311 which had stood as the record since 1994.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Admirand needs just four assists to reach 125 on his career which would make him the program's all-time leader, completing the triple crown of career records
- He also sits within striking distance of single-season records for goals (seven shy of 73), assists (seven shy of 50), and points (seven shy of 116)
- The Beacons scooped 63 ground balls to 23 for the SpartansÂ
