HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beacons rolled into Saturday's contest riding a five-game winning streak dating back to March 10. Their offensive unit eclipsed 20 goals in each of those five wins and had scored north of 25 goals in three of them, but they had yet to match the program record of 30 goals in a game.
The Beacons' last 30-goal performance came on April 2, 2022, against the Salem State Vikings. Facing the same opponent, almost exactly a year later, they had their sights set even higher.
Both teams were held scoreless for nearly four minutes to begin the game. With just over 11 minutes to play in the quarter,
Sean Cullagh opened the scoring courtesy of an assist from
Connor Smith. Cullagh's goal opened the floodgates for a 9-0 run to complete the opening quarter.
The game-opening assist would be one of three for Smith in the first quarter. The team's second-leading goal scorer recorded five assists on Saturday, nearly doubling his season total. Smith also added five goals against the Vikings, surpassing 30 on the season and giving him 10 total points on the day.
In the second quarter, the Beacons continued to unload on offense.
Gavin Admirand,
Jacob Banks, and Smith all capped off hat tricks in the second. The team's 14 total goals in the frame tied the program record for goals in a quarter, set against Mt. Ida College in 2001.
Admirand followed the lead of Smith, netting five goals on the afternoon and adding four assists for his 11th career nine-point game. Coming into Saturday's contest, his seven points per game ranked fourth in all of NCAA Division III.
Heading into the second half with a 23-2 lead, the Beacons had the program record in mind. With over 18 minutes left in the game,
Timothy Sullivan found the back of the net for the Beacon's 31st goal of the afternoon.
In the fourth quarter, with their reserve players taking the field, the Beacons used up most of every shot clock. They pinned on two more scores in the final quarter to take the victory by a record-breaking final score of 33-2.
With reigning LEC Goalie of the Week
Trevor Koppy on the sideline, the Beacons' backup goalie trio of
Otto Kirleis,
Broden Youngclaus, and
Avery Sears held the Vikings to just two goals. Kirleis earned the victory with a pair of saves in his 38 minutes in net.
