BOSTON, Mass. – Five runs on three extra base hits in the first inning would be more than enough for UMass Boston Softball to get back on track against Suffolk University in a single game, which was moved to the UMass Boston campus, on Thursday afternoon as the Beacons cruised to their 11
th victory of the season with a 11-2 win over the Rams in six innings.
THE BASICS
UMass Boston 11, Suffolk University 2 (6 Innings)
UMass Boston (11-3)
Suffolk University (1-10)
HOW IT HAPPENED
A pair of walks to open up the game would kick off a five-run first for the Beacons who used an RBI double by senior outfielder
Sydney Sanden, a two-RBI double from senior designated player
Bri Melchionda, and two-run home run by freshman infielder
Lauren Miner to go ahead 5-0 before Suffolk University would record the first out of the inning and escape the half inning without any further damage.
Sophomore pitcher Ava Brandow would get one back for the Rams in the bottom of the first with an RBI groundout which the Beacons would match in the third inning on a wild pitch by Brandow that scored sophomore utility player
Amauri English. That would be the first of three runs for UMass Boston in the third who took a commanding 8-1 lead as a passed ball on a strikeout by freshman outfielder
Sofie Richland scored two more runs via an error by sophomore catcher Becky Zellin.
A two-out triple from Miner, her team-leading fourth of the season, led to an RBI single by English which put the Beacons into mercy rule territory with an eight-run advantage, 9-1, in the fourth, but three hits by Suffolk would plate a run on an RBI single by sophomore pitcher Ashlyn Conley to push their deficit back down to seven, 9-2.
The eight-run lead would quickly return as a leadoff walk to sophomore infielder
Kaylee Bruce eventually came around to score on an RBI single from Sanden who would also score in the inning on an RBI single by freshman outfielder
Kyleigh Gray who notched her first collegiate hit and RBI in that at-bat to make it 11-2 which would be the final score as Melchionda retired the side in the sixth in the mercy rule victory.
