MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – UMass Boston Softball rolled to their sixth win of the season, all of which have come during their spring break trip in South Carolina, scoring eight unanswered runs to beat McDaniel College in their second game of the afternoon, 9-2, on Wednesday.
THE BASICS
UMass Boston 9, McDaniel College 2
UMass Boston (6-1)
McDaniel College (3-7)
HOW IT HAPPENED
As they have for most of the spring trip, UMass Boston jumped on the scoreboard first in the opening frame with back-to-back doubles from senior infielder
Haley Tilberry and senior outfielder
Sydney Sanden. Error would once again come back to haunt the Beacons as was the case in the first game of the day as McDaniel would notch a run apiece against junior pitcher
Bri Melchionda in the second and third inning as a result of two fielding errors from UMass Boston to jump ahead 2-1.
However, the rest of the game would be controlled by the Beacons who made the most of two errors from the Green Terror as the second miscue would allow junior infielder
Lauryn Bethea to plate the tying run. Sophomore catcher
Kaitlyn Sawyer notched the go-ahead run in the next at-bat with an RBI single to left field which put UMass Boston ahead for good.
The two-run fourth would be the first pair of runs as part of nine unanswered runs that the Beacons would string together. With the bases loaded in the fifth, senior first baseman
Jordan Toomey's sacrifice fly made it a 4-2 ballgame before sophomore utility player
Amauri English delivered the big blow for UMass Boston. English's long three-run home run gave her team a 7-2 lead while giving her 12 RBIs in seven games so far this season after the sophomore had eight RBIs in 28 games played last year.
Freshman infielder
Lauren Miner would scrape across the eighth run of the day for the Beacons on an RBI groundout while a fifth error by McDaniel allowed freshman outfielder
Sofie Richland to reach base safely and push the final run of the day in for UMass Boston who would win the game, 9-2 and improve to 6-1 on the season.
Bri Melchionda pitched all seven innings for UMass Boston, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out nine and walking one. Melchionda did not allow her first hit until the first batter of the sixth inning
