Women's Ice Hockey Honors Outgoing Seniors, Ties Johnson & Wales

BOSTON, Mass. – Honoring outgoing seniors Cailey Kozich, Emily Franciszkowicz, and Addie Budington for Senior Day, UMass Boston Women's Ice Hockey worked a 1-1 tie against Johnson and Wales in the second game of a home-and-home series against the Wildcats at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 1, Johnson & Wales University 1

UMass Boston (9-12-2, 7-7-2 NEHC)
Johnson & Wales University (5-13-3, 5-8-3 NEHC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Like a night before, it was a defensive battle for both sides in the opening period with neither side being able to fully take control of the contest. Despite holding a 24-8 edge in shots and 15-5 lead in shots on goal, it was a battle between junior goalie Victoria Kennedy and sophomore goalie Sofia Tamayo who stood tall in goal for their respective teams, keeping the game scoreless through one.

Junior forward Katie Wilbert would be the first to strike in the game nearly 30 minutes into the contest. Getting a bouncing puck from Budington and sophomore forward Ana Gustafson, Wilbert rifled the puck into the top left corner of the net past Tamayo to give the Beacons the lead. But Johnson and Wales would respond at the end of the frame when a puck caroming off Wildcat players found the stick of junior forward Logan Arseneau whose backhanded shot around a UMass Boston defender tied it up at one with just 19 seconds left in the period.

An evenly matched third period saw opportunities for both sides to take the lead and earn a big win in the conference standings, but Kennedy and Tamayo would stave off any scoring opportunity that came their way for their respective team. A late penalty by sophomore defender Reese Middendorf put the Beacons on the power play with 38 seconds remaining, a power play they would head into overtime with as the game remained tied at one all.

On the attack for the first minute and a half of the overtime frame, UMass Boston would be unable to cash in on the power play chance, going back to even strength with the game still even. Neither team would be able to net the game-winning goal, ending in a 1-1 tie

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Victoria Kennedy finished with 25 saves on 26 shots against Johnson and Wales
  • Sofia Tamayo ended the game with 34 saves for Johnson and Wales on 35 attempts from UMass Boston
  • Both teams were unable to cash in on the power play with UMass Boston finishing 0-for-6 and Johnson and Wales ending the game 0-for-3
  • UMass Boston finished the game holding a 61-36 advantage in shots and 35-26 lead in shots on goal
