Woman's Basketball Pummels Plymouth State, Earn Big LEC Win at Home

BOSTON, Mass.  –  Graduate forward Meg Dixon was honored before the game on Saturday afternoon for reaching 1,000 career points against WestConn late last month before scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season in a big 73-42 victory for the Beacons at the Clark Athletic Center.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 73, Plymouth State University 42

UMass Boston (12-10, 5-7 LEC)
Plymouth State University (5-15, 0-13 LEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Senior guard Sarah Sweet scored the first six points of the game for Plymouth State, helping the Panthers jump out to an early 6-2 lead on UMass Boston. But the Beacons would respond with a 9-0 run led by a three from sophomore guard Sunny Green and layups from Dixon and senior guard Keriann Farina to take an 11-6 edge. Punching back, the Panthers pulled even at 14 all before the Beacons closed out the quarter ahead by three, 18-15.

A low-scoring second quarter saw both teams shoot at or below 25% as the two sides combined for 14 total points in the frame. Finishing 0-for-6 from three and 2-for-12 from the floor, the Panthers made just two field goals along with two free throws in the quarter. For the Beacons, it was a 4-for-16 performance from the floor and 0-for-4 finish from three that saw them net eight points to head into the locker room up by five, 26-21.

The low-scoring affair would continue into the third where neither team would record a basket for the first 2:15 of the quarter. Two free throws from junior forward Alexah Potter and a three from Dixon helped give the Beacons a double-digit lead, before a responding 5-0 run cut that lead back down to five points with 3:41. Over the final three minutes in change, a 14-1 run for UMass Boston helped them expand their lead to an 18-point margin, 45-27, entering the final 10 minutes.

Continuing their dominance from the end of the third quarter, the Beacons would go up by as many as 33 points in the final frame, coming away with the 73-42 victory on their home court.
