Lacrosse Falls In 2023 Season Opener At Salve Regina

Carey and Admirand both record hat tricks in the 17-11 loss in Rhode Island

NEWPORT, RI - UMass Boston Men's Lacrosse came out firing early in their first game of the season on Saturday but struggled to find the net late as they fell to Salve Regina by a final score of 17-11 at Toppa Field.

UMass Boston (0-1)
Salve Regina University (1-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first pass of the UMass Boston Lacrosse season was a "hockey assist" for Jason McNeany. After winning the opening faceoff, McNeany found Preseason All-American Luke Murphy who, in turn, set up Patrick Carey for his first goal of the season after just 15 seconds of game time.

Carey, who earned first-team All-LEC honors as a defenseman in 2022, led the Beacons in ground balls and goals on Saturday, scooping four ground balls and netting three goals. His hat-trick marked the first multi-goal game of his career.

After a scoring drought of over 10 minutes, the teams traded goals twice in the final 4:07 of the first quarter, sending the Beacons into the second frame with a narrow 3-2 lead.

In the first three minutes of the second, the Seahawks netted the tying and go-ahead goals. The lead was short-lived, however, as Murphy and Gavin Admirand each took a pass from Zach Mann to the net, turning a one-score deficit into a one-score advantage, 5-4.

Admirand picked up where he left off at the end of his 2022 LEC Player of the Year campaign, netting a hat trick and adding a game-high four assists.

A pair of goals in the final three minutes from Salve's Max Beauchamp sent the Beacons into the halftime break trailing 6-5.

In the third, three quick Salve goals gave the Seahawks a comfortable four goal lead. A Charlie Chapman goal and Carey's third of the day cut the deficit to 9-7. The Beacons' run was quickly snuffed out by a 5-0 Salve run spanning the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth.

Trailing 17-9, the Beacons put away two goals in the final ten seconds but it was too little, too late. Salve Regina took the game by a final score of 17-11.
