BOSTON, Mass. - UMass Boston Women's Hockey dropped the consolation game of the 16th Annual Women's Codfish Bowl Tournament on Sunday afternoon against third-place finisher Suffolk University, 5-1.
THE BASICS
UMass Boston 1, Suffolk University 5
UMass Boston (3-4-3, 2-2-2 NEHC)
Suffolk University (3-7-0, 2-4-0 CCC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
After suffering a shutout at the hands of eventual tournament champion Amherst College on Saturday night, the Beacons came out firing to open the game on Sunday. It took just over six minutes of play for
Emily Hansen to cash in on a power play opportunity courtesy of assists from
Katie Wilbert and
Allie Reifler.
The beneficiaries of an early Suffolk penalty, the Beacons saw their lead dissolve because of their own transgressions late in the first period. Inside of five minutes left to play, the Rams saw two power play opportunities and capitalized on both, taking a 2-1 lead into the intermission.
The trend of reckless play continued for both sides in the second period as each team was granted four different power play opportunities in the frame. Unfortunately for the Beacons, they came away empty-handed from each chance while Suffolk put away two more goals to build out a 4-1 advantage.
In the third period, Suffolk put one more power play goal into the net to ice the 5-1 victory.
