Beacons Drop Tight Road Game Against Trinity College Bantams in OT

Q&A with UMass Boston men’s lacrosse student-athlete Colin Colby

BOSTON, MA (November 25, 2023) – The UMASS Boston Beacons men's ice hockey team dropped the first of two matchups this weekend against the Trinity College Bantams from Hartford, CT on Saturday evening, as the Beacons' late push to force OT was not enough to edge out the Bantams. Bantams take care of business protecting their home Ice, as the Beacs will look to bounce back tomorrow against Wesleyan College from Middletown, CT.

The Beacons edged out the Bantams barely offensively, totaling 26 shots on goal to the Bantams 25. The Beacons were able to put a body on 12 different shots, led by a team-high three solo blocks by sophomore forward Grady Friedman. Antonio Tarantino took responsibility for the Beacons on the evening, playing all three periods in net for the Beacs, accumulating 21 saves throughout the game. Senior defenseman Kevin
Sadovski led the way offensively for the Beacons, recording a team-high five shots on net throughout three periods.

The Beacons drew blood first, from first-year forward Jack Ford, assisted by junior defender Michael Krupinski, as Ford's blow opened scoring just under nine minutes into the first period to give the Beacons the one-goal lead. The Bantams equalized late off Trinity's Christian Hayes' poke to bring the scoring to level pegs entering the second period.

The second period would be all gas from the Bantams, as they would strike again just halfway into the second period from Connor Sedlak, and once again on a power play goal from the Bantams' Richard Boysen.

Down two goals entering the third period the Beacons found themselves in a hole to fight out of with time winding down in the third. The Beacons applied the pressure down the stretch, outshooting the Bantams eight to five in the third period. First-year forward Jack Mortson would bring the lead to within one for the Beacons in the 12th minute off the assist from Zander Lizotte. The Beacons would strike even with just over
four minutes remaining to give the Beacons a sign of life late in the third period.

Heading into overtime, the Beacons' sticks were cooking exiting the third period, however, the golden goal rule in overtime only allows the first scorer to walk away with the win. Trinity's Kyle Tomaso made quick work in OT, scoring just 20 seconds into play to give the Bantams the victory, handing the Beacons' their fifth loss of the season.

With the loss tonight, UMass falls to 3-5-1 (3-3 New England Hockey Conference). The Beacons' men's ice hockey team will look to bounce back from tonight's OT loss against Wesleyan College (2-2) tomorrow from Middletown, CT.
