Chargers Steal Victory In Final Moments From Men’s Basketball

BOSTON, MA (November 17, 2023) – The UMASS Boston men's basketball team drops a close one in the final moment against the Colby-Sawyer Chargers in a tightly contested, hard-fought battle, as the Beacon's guard trio of junior Emanuel Zayas, senior Bobby Joy, and guard Carson Mecyzwor gave the Beacons their all in the loss.

Zayas, Joy, and Mcyzwor combined for 47, as Zayas led the way with 17 as Joy and Mecyzwor each contributed 15 on. Joy shot 42 % from the field on 6-14 shooting. Mecyzwor finished 5-9 from the field, with a blistering hot 4-5 from beyond the arc. While Zayas finished on 7-15 from the field, good for 46% from the field. Zayas served as the primary playmaker, assisting his teammates on five occasions. Sophomore forward Dominic Shaw was the most active on the glass for the Beacons, as he secured a team-high eight rebounds, with sophomore forward Erik Donaldson right behind him, as he finished with seven rebounds.

The Beacons jumped out to a hot start, but the Chargers would stay strong, running out to a 16-23 lead with halfway to go in the first half. Joy and Mecyzwor would begin to heat up with time winding down in the first half, as back-to-back jumpers from the two would give the Beacons a 6 point lead (36-30) with just under three remaining in the first. However, the Chargers fought hard until the final whistle of the first half, as it concluded 40-38 in favor of the Beacons.

The second half saw the Beacons hold onto the lead for the first 12 minutes of play. A Charger's jumper regained the lead for Colby-Sawyer briefly with nine minutes to go, but the Beacons answered with a small six-point run to regain the lead as well as give them a two-possession cushion.

The final five minutes were as back and forth as you could ask for in NCAA DIII basketball, as there were five lead changes to close out the final five minutes of play. Following a Donaldson layup to bring the Beacons up by one with 20 seconds left, the Charger's graduate guard Bryson Jenkins connected on what could potentially be the biggest three-pointer of his career to give the Chargers the winning basket with under five seconds remaining. Zayas' last-second layup attempt was unsuccessful.

The Beacons dropped a painful one tonight, as they drop to 1-2 on the season, as they look to bounce back on Tuesday, November 21 against the Colonials of Curry College from the Clark Gymnasium in Boston, MA.
