HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening set of Saturday morning's matchup was a back-and-forth affair throughout. An early 12-10 UMass Boston lead was quickly flipped by a 4-0 Rhode Island College run. The Beacons were quick with the response, a 6-1 run featuring a pair of timely kills by standout freshman
Mya Perron. The two teams would trade blows late but the three-point Beacon lead held, giving them a 25-22 opening set victory.
A comfortable 20-15 lead for UMass Boston was made much less comfortable by a 3-0 Rhode Island College run in the second set. Needing five points to close out, the Beacons once again turned to Perron. Behind three more kills from the freshman, the visitors finished on a 5-3 run to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-18 victory.
With a chance to clinch the match, a big Beacons lead was once again made narrow due to a sustained Rhode Island College run. With their lead down to one, it was
Lauren Westlund providing a pair of kills and
Livia Trindade another to put UMass Boston on the doorstep. A service error from the Anchorwomen secured the match-clinching 25-19 victory for the Beacons.Â
