Men's Hockey Battles Back, Falls in Season Opener

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - UMass Boston Men's Ice Hockey battled back from multiple two-goal deficits to tie their season opener 4-4 late in the third period before ultimately falling to UMass Dartmouth on the road on Friday evening.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 4, UMass Dartmouth 5

UMass Boston (0-1-0)
UMass Dartmouth (1-0-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening period of Friday's game saw shots wagered by both sides, but none on goal until the late goings of the frame. A UMass Boston power play with under four minutes to play resulted in four shorthanded shot attempts for the Corsairs, all of them wrangled by Sam Best. UMass Dartmouth was able to find their shorthanded score in the final minute, however, taking a 1-0 lead late in the period.

Another quick goal in the second period stretched the UMass Dartmouth to two, but Jacob Banks was quick to cut it back to one, taking an assist from Kolye Bankauskas to the net for the first UMass Boston goal of the season.

The run on goals continued with the Corsairs tacking on their third in the ninth minute of the frame. Once again, the Beacons were quick to respond. With just over seven minutes until the second intermission, Zander Lizotte put his first career goal into the back of the net to cut the deficit to 3-2.

With just under 12 minutes left in the game, UMass Dartmouth once again stretched the lead to two with their fourth goal of the afternoon. True to form, the Beacons wasted no time responding. Bankauskas used an assist from Gino Carabelli to cut the deficit to 4-3. Just 20 seconds later, the score was tied. Chris Reppman's first career goal knotted the score at four all.

After trailing for the first 50 minutes of play, the Beacons found themselves shooting for the lead with under 10 to play. Unfortunately for UMass Boston, the Corsairs grabbed it first, taking a 5-4 lead that would hold to the final horn.
