Women's Soccer Falls to Castleton

BOSTON, Mass. - UMass Boston Women's Soccer suffered their first loss in conference play at home on Friday afternoon. Visiting Vermont State University Castleton jumped out to a 2-0 lead and a Sofia Roberts goal for the Beacons was too little too late as they fell by a final score of 2-1.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 1, Vermont State University Castleton 2

UMass Boston (6-4-7, 3-1-3 LEC)
Vermont State University Castleton (4-11-1, 1-5-1 LEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beacons rained a shower of shots on the VSU-Castleton goalie, but could not connect in the first half. The Spartans' Alexis Billings opened up scoring in the 28th minute, finding the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

After 25 more minutes of scoreless play, the Spartans bolstered their lead thanks to the boot of Maggie McKearin. The Beacons were quick to respond, cutting the lead back to one in the 58th minute courtesy of Roberts' second goal of the season.

Castleton's Emma Ezzo stood strong in goal against a barrage of UMass Boston shot attempts, keeping the equalizing goal out of the net and securing the road victory for the Spartans.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Beacons outshot the Spartans 29-3, including an 11-3 advantage on shots on goal
  • Roberts is one of four freshmen with multiple goals for UMass Boston this season, joining Christina LaFauci, Amanda Reagan, and Chloe Shapiro
