Third Period Rally Falls Short for Men's Ice Hockey on Road Versus Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A furious third period rally fell just short for UMass Boston Men's Ice Hockey as their four-game winning streak came to a halt against Skidmore College on the road Saturday afternoon with a narrow 4-3 defeat.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 3, Skidmore College 4

UMass Boston (6-9-0, 3-5-0 NEHC)

Skidmore College (10-4-1, 4-3-1 NEHC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Skidmore College struck for two goals in the opening period, with the first one coming from senior defender Devon Mussio, six minutes into the contest, on passes from sophomore forward Kaeden Patrick and sophomore forward Zach Lindewirth, giving the Thoroughbreds a 1-0 lead. That lead would extend to two just over halfway through the frame, when junior forward Thomas Finck was fed passes from sophomore forward Zach Frisk and Lindewirth before beating senior goalie Sam Best in net for the Beacons.

Freshman forward Mike Manzo continued his hot weekend for UMass Boston, cutting their deficit in half with 13:31 remaining in the second in which junior forward Corey Clifton notched an assist to make it four consecutive games with at least a point for the Beacons. But Skidmore would respond to regain a two-goal advantage, 3-1, heading into the final period when junior forward Nick Cozzi netted his first goal of the season.

The Thoroughbreds were seemingly in control in the third, going up 4-1 after a turnover in front of Best led to a one-on-one shot opportunity for Frisk, who went top shelf on the senior goalie. But UMass Boston would attempt a late comeback starting with sophomore forward Ty Mathews netting his second goal of the season just over a minute after the fourth Skidmore College goal.

Recording his third goal of the weekend, junior Evan Googins beat junior goalie Tate Brandon to bring the Beacons back within one goal with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. The comeback would fall short for UMass Boston as Tate stood strong in goal for the Thoroughbreds with the goalie pulled for the Beacons, who fell 4-3.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Evan Googins finished the weekend having netted three goals while tacking on an assist and earning four points
  • Corey Clifton has now recorded points in four consecutive games despite his three-game goal scoring streak being snapped
  • Mike Manzo now has a two-game goal streak, three-game assist streak, and three-game point streak after tacking on another goal and assist on Saturday afternoon
  • This is the fifth consecutive game in which the Beacons have recorded three or more goals

WHO'S NEXT
UMass Boston continues their four-game road trip next Friday night in Northfield, Vermont with a 7:00 PM matchup against Norwich University. Earlier this season, the two teams met at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink where the Beacons held a 1-0 lead in the final period before two goals in the latter part of the third period gave the Cadets a 2-1 road win.
