Dixon's 25 Points Lead Women's Basketball to Big Road LEC Win

GORHAM, Maine - Graudate forward Meg Dixon's 25 points and nine rebounds led the way for UMass Boston Women's Basketball, who recorded their third win in their last four games, beating a Little East Conference opponent in the University of Southern Maine by a final score of 69-58 in Hill Gym on Wednesday evening.

The victory moved the Beacons into the sixth and final spot for the LEC Tournament, one game ahead of the Huskies with the tiebreaker in hand at the moment. UMass Boston currently has three conference wins on the year to Southern Maine's two.

UMass Boston 69, Southern Maine 58

UMass Boston (10-8, 3-5 LEC)

Southern Maine (4-11, 2-6 LEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Despite shooting just 3-for-16 in the first quarter, Southern Maine hung with UMass Boston through the first 10 minutes, as the Beacons led 14-11 after making five of their six free throw attempts in the frame.

In the second quarter, UMass Boston kept the Huskies away from the free throw line and continued to limit them from the floor, allowing a meager 4-for-12 shooting in the frame. A 15-0 run for the Beacons helped grow their lead from 18-15 to 31-15 over a span of five minutes in the quarter.

The Beacons shared the wealth in the second frame with six different players recording a basket. The dominant 15-0 run was highlighted by four points apiece from leading distributor senior guard Keriann Farina and bench contributions from freshman guard Sibayla Jensen.

Out of the halftime break, Dixon took over a familiar role as the Beacons' primary scoring option. She shot 6-for-7 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line across the final two frames to help keep the Huskies at arm's length.

The second half also saw nine points from junior forward Alexah Potter (13 points, nine rebounds, 6-of-9 shooting) and eight from sophomore guard Sunny Green (11 points, 4-for-8 shooting), both of whom would join Dixon as double-digit scorers on the night.

With multiple UMass Boston players facing foul trouble, Southern Maine took advantage, outscoring the Beacons 27-21 in the final frame. The Huskies will pull within 10 points with 30 seconds left, but the UMass Boston defense held strong, holding on to win by a final score of 69-58.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • UMass Boston grabbed 29 defensive rebounds to the Huskies' 17 boards while outrebounding them 39-26 in the game
  • The Beacons made the most of their second chance opportunities, outscoring Southern Maine, 18-7, in that category
  • The Beacons' 54.7% shooting from the field was their best in a game this season and their 42.9% from three was their third best
  • UMass Boston only trailed for 19 seconds in the contest, 9-8, in the first quarter
  • With her 25 points, Meg Dixon is now 25 points away from reaching 1,000 points in her career
